Where do the stairs GO??? Okay my house never finished back contained by 1954, they never built...

Okay my house never finished back contained by 1954, they never built actual stairs, we only hold a pull down. Where do the travel? We have a headland cod style home. two bedrooms on the right side and a living room and the kitchen on the left and a bathroom surrounded by the middle. Please help!
