Answers:    True fully you will call for to know some information to answer this question. In most cases you read out it is an in ground pool you will stipulation to purchase an in ground pool pump usually anywhere from 3/4 HP to 1 1/2 HP. The HP is dictated by the size of the pool 30,000 gallons ect. And the type of filter (Sand, DE, paper). Good rule of thumb is to purchase a 1 HP pump that seem to be a good size for most pools. Make sure it is a pump made for an contained by ground pool because most pumps made for above ground pools do not have the go before pressure needed to suck the water to the pump. Most pumps come equip next to a large screw on adaptor that attaches to the incoming Plastic pipe from the string and the outgoing line will most commonly be flexible pipe.

If you articulate this pump is from the 40's there will probably hold to be some plumbing done on the incoming line to game the fitting on the new pump if you or someone you know is somewhat conversant on plumbing it is not usually to bad. If it comes down to it you can other take the section over to lowes and say I obligation to go from this fitting to this fitting and they will transmit you what you need.

I hope this help

Good luck
