Answers: If buying the mattress won't put a major dent within your wallet, I'd go with that, but otherwise gather your money and just buy the pad.
I undeniably love my mattress. I had the toppers before and found a floor model bed on mart for 50% off. Very nice. Have had it 8 years very soon and not one sag anywhere. If you put a topper on a saggy mattress, the mattress will still sag. These do not give the impression of being to sag. Ever. They are however, not cheap. We recently purchased mattress toppers for our kids, whose mattresses be hard as a rock. Now they are soft and cozy.
I think if you buy the mattress, you're wasting profusely of money since it is only the first inch or so that matters.
