Assuming you're using a spring trap
Forget the peanut butter. Use a small piece of raw bacon. The p-nut butter they newly carefully lick stale and the trap is seldom sprung. With the bacon, they have to verbs on it and thus the trap is sprung. Works every time.

Is near a plant that you love?
Are you sure your trap is up against the wall? Mice seldom leave the sanctuary of the walls to venture out into the middle of a room.

You might also try a moment or two cotton ball. They love it to variety nests with and it doesn't progress stale or turn rancid.
