We are in the Midwest. . . I'm from MO. . . That is a generalized permanent status for the old fashioned smallholding country and what the pioneers described this region as while we were growing as a country. . . Anyway, try using herb such as mint that grows rapidly and smells really righteous (plus you can cook it), and moss roses come back every year within various colors. . . Irises are other an ideal choice, because after flowering you enjoy great foliage, . . . You could call your local garden center/nursery and they will hand over you great options also :) GL!
If it is ground cover that you want and something that will survive and spread, Myrtle is the best, it may also be prearranged as periwinkle. It can grow in the sun or shade dry or moist land, it does not mater, and it flowers most of the summer has small Periwinkle coloured flowers (go figure) Many times you will see it growing crazed on the forest floor. It stays green but dormant in the winter.
