I have bought a wooden chopping board which requires oil before use. It doesn't contest my kitchen so was wondering if I could woodstain it a dark shade. Is it safe to do this and next oil it, would it still be ok to prepare food on it afterwards?
No it wouldn't be protected. Most stains are poisonous, and from oiling it, the grease is absorbed into the wood so it most promising won't stick and flake off. If it did stick it would be useless to grease it because the stain wouldn't let it hold your attention the oil unless it started flaking next the oil would break down the stain.

It's probably not dangerous from a health standpoint, but would soon look shocking from a aesthetic standpoint. You would simply be creating a running headache where none existed.

Stains are simply pigment (finely ground powders), dye, (or both), a touch binder such as oil or varnish and like mad of thinner that soon evaporates away.

Who says that every piece of wood surrounded by the kitchen must match color?
Answers:    Shore is, but not near a commercial stain. Brew a strong coffee (or tea) and rub it in, agree to dry, if too pale re-aply, dry next oil. You may own to re-do from time to time but is non toxic and may get the depth of color you require.
