My grandmother handed down to me some lovely antique mahogany furniture that she unfortunately painted a few decades ago. She did not strip the finish formerly she painted, however, and judging from the way she usually does projects, I really doubt that she even primed it. Is near some way that I could gently remove the paint in need damaging the finish underneath?
Answers: May be! If you are lucky the top layer is latex paint and the unproved layer is not. There are a great number of paint removers that will only remove latex and not grease base. Take a small piece or a drawer to a pro paint store and ask them. They may have some one on staff that can bear a look and offer advise. Try starting on a rugged to see spot and see if it works.
Unfortunately, all products used to remove paint, will also at the same time remove the innovative finish. Do not try to sand the paint off, trying to get pigmented paint out of corners, nitches, and around turnings by sand, will only damage the profiles of the surfaces. Resign yourself to removing adjectives of the finish. My recomendation, is to have it done professionally. While you may be able to do the duty, and get good results, if you do come about to have a problem, then the cost of "redoing" your work will be on you. If done professionally, if the finished product does not suit your expectations, the pro does it over, and it doesn't cost you any more. Also, the pro have the tools, space, and the knowledge of how it should be done. Reworking a "painted" piece, is a pain contained by the you know what! There is no way to strip paint off furniture lacking stripping off the finish underneath but if you want to paint another color just paint a coat of a color which make the required color
