I love to garden and I'd like to revise how to can so we can eat stout veggies/fruits all year long. Is it difficult to swot and do? Is it expensive to buy things to can?

It is really assured. I have be canning for 55 years, and really wallow in not only the proces, but the results.
It can be expensive, but I buy adjectives my supplies from thrift stores, yard sale and rummage sales. I can find jars at St. Vincent's for 5-10 cents respectively. I picked up my present canner for $5.00, and have even found boxes of lid for 25 cents.
I would suggest buying a GOOD recipe book. You will use it for years. Make a register of what you need, and start shopping.
