I just stained two imperfect rocking chairs. One I used a polyurethane coat on it for shine and the other is just stained beside no shine coat. It's been a week and the odor is still near. I've tried letting them sit outside in the fresh nouns for 12 hours a day, but it's still strong plenty to give me a headache when I bring them inside. One stool is for me and one is for my son for Christmas.
Good luck. I had a piece that my husband stained and it smelled for, literally, years. A couple of years ago, I give up and painted it white. Now I love it. Perhaps it has something to do near whether it is an oil-based or water-based product. Not all stained objects stink---but I perceive your pain.....I repugnance the smell too.

what a nice entity to do...

what about putting furniture polish on it? Can you put another coat of something else - that doesnt enjoy the smell?
Answers:    The petroleum distillates in the stains are the culprit. There may also be acetone/toluene involved. Many ancestors are very sensitive to this stuff (I bet you don't similar to "new saloon smell" either!) Only time will fix it--they must outgas completely.

They might not be drying properly any, which could be exacerbating the situation. If it is damp outside, you might truly be slowing down the outgassing process. Do you have a shed or "man house" where on earth they can be kept while they cure? By Christmas, I think they should be okay.
