Fool proof is to strip rotten the bark surrounded by a wide strip adjectives around the trunk. This stops all nutrients getting to the leaves etc. Keep an eye on it as the tree within an attempt to live will bridge the gap next to new stuff and it will pick up quite like greased lightning. Just remove the new and it will unhurriedly die off. I did this near a willow tree and it took a while but it certainly died past its sell-by date. I was later able to cut it down surrounded by sections starting near the branches and ending up near just the trunk to dispose of.
