I bought two unfinished pine chests that I stained using a minwax stain. I bought these beside the idea that I would store my sweaters/blankets surrounded by them during the off season. The problem is, my sweaters/blankets come out smelling close to the stain. I have tried departing the lid open for days, to nouns them out, as well as storing the items within a sealed container in the chests, but neither work. Does anyone have any accepted wisdom on how to seal within the smell, so I can use these as I intended to?

Answers:    A coat of shellac would be the best thing to stamp this with. It will adapt the color, but it dries to the point that there is no smell reasonably quickly and will stamp the remaining stain vapors.

Another option would be a clear dampen borne polyurethane. It will not change the color, again dries duly quickly. It may permit just a bit of the vapor spread through, but I would not think it would be ample to cause problems.

For any option, plan to confer on the chest open and neglected for a few days to allow the coating to fully cure.
