We have get one of those restaurant purple fly zappers, and heaps of basil plants...none of them work and they congregate round the centre lantern, loads of them. They are driving me mad.

Walmart and other discount outlets provide a fly catcher. I don't recall the term, but it is basically a round container roughly speaking the size of a spool of thread. On one end is a covered lead like used to close litter bags. You simply verbs it and out comes a fly paper video that is hugely sticky. Hang the catcher to the light fixture and you will be amazed at the insects it will capture. Don't hang it too low so that it will ambush in your fuzz when you walk lower than. Also don't pull the cartridge completely out of the container as it's weight help keep the cassette hanging directly down. Good luck.
