There is a device called a Charlie Bar . It is installed surrounded by the off side it works like a dowel within the jam but you can install it high ample a small child cant reach it.http://www.amscousa.com/Door_Hardware/Pa... you can place a wooden dowel or metal rod in the track of the door so it can't slide unstop unless removed
You can purchase little clamps which clamp onto both sides, the door and the part on the wall, and screw closed. You can easily open it if you inevitability to, but if you put it up high, a child cannot reach it and catch out.
And I realize this may not STOP them, but it might be helpful. Get one of those simple, attachable door chimes or alarms which will go stale if the door opens. At least this would alarm you--no pun intended! :-) --if the door is open.
I would also suggest calling your local fire dept. and/or police station and asking them for suggestions. Quite a sticky problem, I feel for you.
Answers: They do have a small lock that go behind the sliding glass door it is highly small but works great. but you have to bend down to unlock the safety lock . It's to maintain someone out or in.
If you don't use the door often it would hang on to it shut & safe. Its small and you screw it. It is a better safty lock than a dowel. but a dowel will work if the childern aren't old satisfactory to figure it out.
