Answers:    If you truly mean "controlled the direction" and not the speed, after the only matured Singer machine I can suppose of that fits the description was one used for sewing boots and other leather products. On that mechanism, there be a presser-foot that had a button you could move to change the direction of the feed. I should remember the model number, but I guess I'm getting older...I imagine it might have be a 129K.
