Answers: It is quite dense. Other than that, "engrave or stain" is largely a function of how it's finished, not the wood itself.
It's used on a low of low-end furniture, so often it's finished inexpensively, i.e., a toner. A toner is finish near color in it, so that when the finish chips, it leaves a standard lamp spot.
