Reversion is due to drought of light.
lacking knowing which variety of cacti it is, i really couldnt give an account you, but, you might go to this association and see if what you have is in that, and maybe see what's going on next to it, or perhaps, even contact them something like it.
it sounds tho, like the plant may enjoy been full grown, but not fully matured when you bought it.
