Someone gave you a apt suggestion to stay away from the small kits. They truly are "ripoffs,"
Hi:
Bonsai plants do cart some work but you can do them. I have taken vigilance of some Bonsai plants and your main purpose is to maintain the strange growth and if in planters, they will hold to be watered more then surrounded by the ground. If you want to save somewhat money here is a tip for you. Are there any nurseries or garden centers still start in your nouns? Even a chain store may still fetch some shrubs. This will save you money and also be a great project for you and your boyfriend.
Purchase a one or three gallon shrub. Junipers and Hollies formulate great Bonsai plants. The first step is to decide if you want it tree form. This is where on earth you take sour the bottom branches so the bark can be see. Do you want shapes of a circle or let it grow intrinsically? You can buy kits but I recommend to my clients to try it themselves. The shaping will hold time and you always trim the leaves and little branches at an angle.
If you would similar to steps on how to do this, contact me at my website. I will link you to my site map as this page have everything I have on the website. I will also relationship you to my gallery of plants section so you can see some pictures of Junipers and other plant specimens.
I hope this have helped some and upright luck to you. If you want to look into buying a Bonsai I have an affiliate page that Landscape USA sell Bonsai as well as a few other companies. Good luck contained by your gift of a Bonsai.

Answers: Don't buy a bonsai kit because those are really purely ripoffs. You get a small pot, some seed and dirt. It will take ages to grow a tree into what they look similar to on the packaging.
Start near a small tree and if you can't find a bonsai shop locally contact the bonsai society in your nouns (link below) and see if they can recommend a reputable grower that will recommend a good bonsai for a apprentice and not charge you an arm and a leg or sell you something for indoors that won't survive growing indoors.
