From late October - Spring time (April or so) I receive the little black ants all over. Bathroom, utility room, kitchen. They come from the floor of wall and our ducts. They only come out during the winter and it happen every winter. We cannot even put our dogs food down because they get into it. We enjoy a dog and two cats so we are limited to what pesticides or sprays we can use. What can I do to stop these things? I am tired of have to vacuume a black abyss every morning. Any ideas?
I live in close proximity Chicago, in a single floor cattle farm, on a slab not a foundation. Please ask anything if you need more info.
Answers: I enjoy used "bug bombs" for ants in the house since. They are labeled as safe for pets (as long as you set off the house for a certain amount of time), and zilch bad have happened to my cats. I believe the brand I used be Ortho, but I'm not sure -- yellow and green box.
Also, if your dogs step out on a leash and your cats are indoor cats, you should try a poison around your foundation in the radiator months. This would prevent MORE ants from getting in than you already hold.
But the thing is, you own a nest in your house because ants "hibernate" within the cold of winter and need a warmness source (like your furnace, hence swarming out of the ducts) to be stirred into action. Your best bet would be to locate the nest and treat it directly beside pesticide. To find the nest, check known squelchy areas, window frames and sills, door frames, and anything wooden surrounded by the bathroom. Some ants like moist areas, though they can nest surrounded by dry areas, but less frequently. Look for sawdust-like bits and pieces building up on a window sill or the place where on earth the highest concentration of ants is to point you to the nest. Once found, you can spot-treat the nouns (best to remove molding, drywall, etc to get it right!) and cover it to keep your animals not detrimental.
