Hi Marianne this is a problem I have have in times past and it either medium that you have over occupied the stapler (try removing some so the stapler closes). Or it could be they are the wrong sized staples

Do you tight, it keeps springing outward and won't lock surrounded by ? If so, there is a hook or a tab where on earth you push it in near your thumb.
You have to hook it within manually.
It won't lock in by its self.
Also, check to see if you enjoy too many staples contained by the gun.
