Hi, I was wondering if anybody could communicate me how hard it would be to install a wood stove contained by my basement. Could I patch it into the ductwork of my important heat/air, also if I moved could I take it near me? I'm trying to think of ways to let go some money on heating this winter, and thought this might be a apt idea.
First problem, If your insurance company finds out you will be short insurance. No questions asked you will be dropped.
Wood fire produces both flamable gas and extreme heat contained by the chimney, yours will not be rated for that giving of heat. Second no building inspector would sign past its sell-by date on it. If one of your neighbours complained of the smoke and smell they would force you to remove it and all possible contact your insurance. I love wood warmth but it is a pain surrounded by the ***, dirty smelly and a lot of complex work. I would look at better insulation and leave the wood alone. I believe you would be much better rotten. PS here in Canada if you enjoy wood heat of any benevolent the insurance companies are looking for a way to veto you insurance. If its pre-existing they demand regular inspections and or removal. I love the conception, but I'm sorry it isn't worth the trouble. Sorry
I think you hold a potential fire hazard and almost for sure building code infringement trying to put a wood stove exhaust into a heating duct system. You really don't want to burn your place down or present yourself carbon monoxide poisoning, I would presume?
And you should look at the potential cost of wood fuel heating, too. If you are adjectives your own wood that is a possible stash, but if you are purchasing firewood or pellets for a pellet stove that get to be just as expensive as other heat methods, depending a little on your location. The thermal output for wood is much smaller amount per 'unit' as it were. I'd do the math and find out if you really would be good any money. With the modifications you would have to engender to build this safely I consider you are on the short end of that equation.
Answers: Go for it!! I really miss mine (I sold my home & moved into one that doesn't hold a stove-now I have to pay packet $$$$$ for heat).
I'm not sure how you could tie it into your existing duct work with out a specific style of stove that's designed lately for that.
As for installation in a subterranean vault, you'll need to run single wall pipe to the ceiling, later triple wall all the opening up through the roof. This can be a DIY project for the knowledgeable party.
