Okay, we are talking going on for a small, two-bedroom one-bath cottage. Really as small as a small apartment, but with a downstairs subterranean vault for laundry.

Last month, the bill was $90, and this month is $360. The simply difference is that we weren't getting hot water (lots of cold showers) and consequently we turned up the thingy on the hot water stove.

My mother lives nearby surrounded by a 3,000 square foot house, and her bill was 240. What's going on????
Answers:    You don't speak what country or if US what provider you are with.
So this may swing, but some companies will estimate you meter for several months based on ancient usage. Then they will come out and check the meter. If their estimation was stale and you used more you may be making up the difference. I would call the service provider and ask them if they own been doing this. Your bill should also state if they base it of an estimation or actual meter reading. The other thing to ask them when calling is if they hold a program were they convey someone out to your house to check your gas appliances for safety and helpfulness (i.e. gas leak, hot hose set to high) if they do these are usually free. In my area they do that foe free and also hand over you tips on keeping your usage down.

Best of luck.
Keep your water stove around 110 degrees. Any hoter is a surplus of energy and is a precarious scald hazard.
