Probably the battery is going doomed to failure. Why don't YOU fix the fire alarm?? What's more important--a two dollar battery or YOUR LIFE?

It may be that your building is old and the alarm is hardwired to the prevalent electric, which if there are power outages your alarm can go stale. It also means you probably need to transmute the batteries. When changing the battery be sure to write on them with a sharpie the date of when you changed the batteries. Also hold a look out in your local paper of when your fire department is going to do a free smoke alarm inspection/test, you could benefit from it.
