My roof has a reasonably large outflow that directs rain down the side of one wall on the first story(two story house). fortunately this singular occures about 5% of the time it rain. is there any rationale for the infrequency of the leak? what would formulate it not leak, excluding completely redoing the roof?
Are you sure it is the roof. Could be spouting / gutters overflowing posterior through eaves if it is an outside wall. Check they are all clear including downpipes from spouting and gutters. Unfortunatly best time to look is when it is raining.
Could be coil forcing water stern under roof through flashings that do not own enough cover.
Try to determine which direction the wind is blowing when your roof does escape. Then get a duo of binoculars and look for shingles that are tweaked up on the edge or side, or ruins like leaves,maple seed in the valley.
Sometimes a roof will only filter when the wind drives the precipitation in places rainfall cannot reach short wind driving it.
Get a few caulk tubes of black roof patch, and bear a small wisk broom up with you on the roof, broom out any jetsam in the valley and look for those tweaked up shingles. Check for cracks in flashings around chimney,dormers,etc, Use the black caulking to reseal some of these tweaked up shingles or cracks surrounded by valleys,etc. You can also check around vent pipes. It's easier said than done to track a leak as it could be running down a rafter for fairly a ways. If you don't feel comfortable getting on your roof, phone up someone with insurance to pilfer a look at your roof - sometimes a roofer can spot trouble without even getting on your roof.
Answers: Depending on rock-hard it is raining or how the wind is driving the precipitation will determine how bad your bleed is. Being that you are noticing the trickle only on the first floor and not the second it might not be your roof at adjectives. You could have a crack somewhere within your siding or by a window or sill. If it is your roof you will want this repaired ASAP. If you dally too long you could have more than you bargain for and end up replacing more than merely your roof.
