Why did my computer caught smouldering? Approximately 1 hour ago I was sitting at my desk at work...

Approximately 1 hour ago I was sitting at my desk at work and I open to smell this weird smell as the scent get stronger. I begin to desire to find where this scent be coming from as the whole room be smoky; I actually thought it be coming through the vents. But when I go out into the other offices, nearby was no burning scent. It smelt similar to wire be burning. I pulled the fire alarm and called code red. The firemen come and just pulled the cords from the computer, apparently one of the wires have burn. Why did this happen?
