Residential system, will be closing for New England winter myself. Need to buy a new or used compressor.
Answers:    Any 'pancake', or 'torpedo' type of compressor should be able to knob this. 'Pancake' compressors are usually about 1.5 gallons, 'torpedo' compressors are usually about 2 to 3 gallons. Both types can be used to run nailers, etc. You can achieve compressors that hold up to about 6 gallons, but really, its the same compressor as on the torpedo style, freshly a different tank.

If the only time you're going to use it is to winterize your sprinkler... I'd suggest that you rent one, fairly than buy one.

Give some thought to how you're going to connect the air to the sprinkler system.

It depends on how much pipe is underground and the size of the pipe. The airflow of the compressor is more important than the pressure.

How do you attach the compressor to the irrigation pipe? If you use a schrader tap, just attach an air chuck to the pipe and agree to the compressor run until the water stops. If you have some giving of a homemade connection, with a shutoff spigot, hook the air hose up to the valve and consent to the air flow until the water stops. A small to surrounding substance compressor should suffice.
