Ok so our central air & furnace are over 20 years elderly. Our Furnace works fine but our central air have a new problem every year. We just put another $150 into it. We are on a tight budget and we only don't know what the best thing to do is. Hold out till this one breaks again, or get a topical one now. We were quoted 5 impressive for a new furnace & central nouns unit. Should we get a unusual central air immediately? wait for it to die again?replace both cause we will be doing that sometime anyway since they are both so antediluvian? what would you do? we are on a tight budget but sick of this one nickel & diming us to death. It's like an antiquated used car. But like i said our furnace works fine for presently but is 20 years old.
I vote for a new component. Your energy savings will discharge for the new unit much sooner than you imagine, and you and your family will be comfortable. Make sure you get at most minuscule three estimates before spending the money.
You don,t hold to get a new furnace and nouns conditioner at the same time. If your furnace is working ok and the heat exchanger is contained by good shape ( have someone check it ) after just replace the a/c. If in a couple of years the furnace act up then you can replace the furnace. The plenum that the a/c part fits into above the furnace will remain anyway. Good luck/ Having face this one, I bit the bullet and bought a replacement.
Start a savings account and auto-deduct some money towards the spanking new purchase each paycheck.

Also, check around. There is probably a state, or county, or city, program to give you an incentive to replace that matured furnace with a newer and more efficient one. I get the gas installation paid for by the city to convert and upgrade.
The answer is comfortable, IF you plan to stay in the house for a while. You will get a huge drop surrounded by your electric bill when you replace a 20 year old central A/C component. It will eventually pay for itself as well as anyone more reliable than the old one. The savings are probably not as dramatic on the heat side, but you will still probably see a big drop in your heating bill. As the costs of vitality are going up a lot, the time to pay wager on for something like this is going down every year. But you still need to expect to be here for a few years to make the investment pay past its sell-by date.

I would get several estimates as well. I wouldn't automatically assume you pocket the lowest one. This is something where the quality of the work matter and a good installer does make a difference. I would parley to friends, neighbors etc. for recommendations on HVAC contractors.

These things never get better and it may be an hypothesis to start saving for a new system If you put $150 a year into the one you enjoy now, it will take you 33 years to spend $5,000.
Answers:    150 for a repair is cheap. that's not nickel and diming, that's pennies. I'm all for getting the utter most i can from anything, but in this case...

1) a hot furnace and ac unit will be much much more efficient, it could money for itself in 5 years.
2) when your ac breaks i'm sure it's annoying, but not critical. your heat is 20 years feeble also, when that decides to go down it will probably be the middle of winter and 0 deg f outside (murphys law) and the HVAC those will charge you extra for an emergency install, and your options will be limited to what they may enjoy quickly. installing now let you get some quotes, and look at different equipment to see what your options are.
