What is an average duration for a marine softener? Ours is 6yrs and own have several hiccup.? I have cleaned the innards several times but found no blockage...

I have cleaned the innards several times but found no blockage but it works afterwards. Could I manuallly cycle it and next unplug it ? Would the water still flo thru the filter textile?
