I am looking at purchasing a home that is contained by need of a contemporary roof among other things, and was wondering if someone could notify me what the difference was between the different materials available for use. The house is within Pittsburgh, PA. The homes around the area give the impression of being to have any slate or asphalt. What is the life expectancy of respectively type? Are there in no doubt benefits accompanied beside each one? Any guidance would be great.
Asphalt shingles are the best and easiest to install and enjoy a 30 to 40 year warranty. Slate shingles have a great look but are rather bit more pricy and have a 50 year warranty. And wood shingles are virtuous but can become discolored quickly. All shingles are great but for a fitting price and a good look, asphalt would be the mode to go.
Hi - I live in Pittsburgh and I own a house whose roof is cut slate, part asphalt, and module rubber! Slate is terrific, but as the other posters have pointed out, it is really expensive to install and to fix. The slate roof be there when I bought the house, when it finally go, I plan to replace with asphalt shingles.
If you enjoy a flat roof, you can't go wrong near a membrane (rubber) roof. And for a peaked roof, in Pittsburgh I'd recommend asphalt. It's pretty good and if it's installed correctly can last comparatively a while.

Answers: Wood shingles are no longer allowed in California. They burn. They also blow bad in storms. And your insurance cost more. Tile roofs are superb, but they crack if you walk on them.
You should consult a professional roofer for direction on what works best in your climate and what type of roof your house can support.
Most race here re-roof with asphalt when their roof wishes replacing, because it is less expensive and not adjectives trusses can support a heavier roof.
