I have a cast-off (so out of warranty) Holmes humidifier, one of the Cool Mist ultrasonic models. A couple of weeks ago I let it run dry accidentally, and since later it barely produces any vapor.
Points remarkable:
- The fan is OK.
- The transducer (metal plate that vibrate to produce the vapor) is definitely running but it's simply far too weak. I can see the hose down 'jumping' when I lift the reservoir sour the base, but the vapor is so little it's narrowly visible. Before this happen, I could see lots of vapor even on the low setting.
- I cleaned all the clamber off the transducer and wet level sensor beside vinegar and a soft toothbrush but it didn't help.
Help troubleshoot please?
Answers: The certainty that it ran dry have ruined it! These transducers are designed to rely upon continual water contact to not overheat and die a sudden extermination. What you suspect to be working is just the transformer trying to excite the worn out transducer. The ill transducer will respond but with the sole purpose as a token of it's former efficientcy. It's like a worthy car running on flat tires.
