How can I stop water sledge hammer in a two story townhose/unit?
Its more of a screech noise than bang...

Its really annoying and it wakes up my child at night.
Answers:    economically you can anchor the pipes every 4-5 feet beside plumbers tape they do have need of to stay in place and not shake to stop making noise .
You probably enjoy very large water pressure within the house. Water hammer is nouns in the pipes, and they report whenever a fixture like a clothes washer, shower stopcock or a dishwasher shuts off. The screaching uproar tells me that it is a pressure problem. If it happen when no water is human being used, say at dark, there might be a problem beside one of the toilets in the house. There are ways to exterminate the problem, but you'll need a professional plumber. Ask them to check the toilet "flapper" to create sure it is sealing properly (they'll know what you mean). If the pressure contained by the house is too high,
they will install a "pressure reducing valve" on the hose down main contained by the basement, and this will bring the pressure down to what is considered ordinary. It shouldn't take longer than a couple of hours to do the mission, and the valve should cost around $100.00. Of course you'll hold to pay for labor and any other parts they may use. While they are near, ask them to make sure in attendance are the correct type and number of pipe hangers securing the marine lines. I've been within the plumbing business for about 20 years. Hope I help.
