One of our toilets (5 years old) will continue to run after flushing. The toilet bowl is full but the reservoir keeps wanting to overrun and you can hear it. The bottom valve is fine, everything looks fine. If I calmly lift the globe it stops running, if I bang on the reservoir it stops running and strangely if I turn on the bathroom sink for a second it stops the toilet.
I can't bend the arm because it's all plastic, not metal. Any thinking??
It sounds similar to the water tap is going bad or I don`t know the float need adjustment. Banging on the container is probably doing about equal as lifting on the ball applying the tiny bit more of pressure to close the spout. Replacing the whole assembly might be the best cure, they are pretty cheap. In the connote time you might be able to adjust the elevation of the ball and that might work. There is commonly a screw or bolt on top of the tap assembly that will adjust the height of the bubble. Turn it so the ball will sit lower surrounded by the tank and see if that works.
There is a screw you can turn to adjust at what position the float shuts the water sour, it's right where the arm connects to the river valve.

Answers: Typically, the toilet continues to run because the rubber flap in the cistern isn't seated properly, which makes the toilet believe the bowl isn't full.
Banging on the cistern may help to form the flap but I don't know how turning on the sink helps the problem.
Spend $10-$15 and replace the guts of the toilet. Should with the sole purpose take 30 minutes or smaller quantity.
