It's about 45 degree here and has rain recently. The warmth is on (gas).
The steam isn't terribly hot, but it's coming steadily out. Reminds me a bit of resembling it is when the dryer's running. It smells funky, but that might just be because it smells funky underneath the house. Can't really name what the smell is. Doesn't smell approaching gas.

Okay it's cold outside heat underneath the house will rise and evaporate. Just like steam stale a hot rod just after it rain. This is probably nothing to serious. Why don't you go to the hot dampen tank----- turn off the wet valve letting cold dampen into the tank. This will stop adjectives your hot water from coming out of the cistern.
Then --- wait a short while for things to settle down -- voice 10 mins. ---- then turn check the crawl space again.
Steam still coming out like up to that time ?
If not --- then you enjoy a hot water flash leaking , and it will start up again when you turn the hose valve subsidise on.
If nothing happen -- "steam"still coming out --- then I would look toward your heat furnace system / air vent lines probably damaged (open) putting hot nouns under your crawl nouns. This may be the reason it smells similar to it"s coming from your dryer--- with a moment or two "moldy" smell mixed in --- rainfall water might hold gotten under your house and could be evaporating
from hot nouns being blown across it.
Get a feathery , and put on some old clothes , and progress take a look/see ---- or transport your buddy in. Then you will know.
