I opened the damper hoping it would dribble through into the fireplace, but it's still stuck after 10 hours. I can't find any chimney sweep companies that are open during the holiday weekend.
Answers: If you are inclined to go to closely of trouble you can do what I once did...Cut a piece of stiff corrugated cardboard one inch smaller than the size of your chimney flue.Drill a hole on two opposite sides. Tie two strings of length equal within length to the depth of your chimney (top to damper). Lower the cardboard rectangle from the top of the chimney holding one string higher than the other so that the cardboard sinks into the flue parallel to the chimeny walls. As the cardboard approches the bird he will shy away from it. Once the cardboard is below the bird's location incline the opposite side string positioning the cardboard horizontally beneath the bird. As you slowly verbs up evenly on both strings the cardboard platform will be positioned beneath the bird. Slowly pull the cardboard platform, elevator style to the top of the chimney. Stand put a bet on as bird approaches opening. If he is not inadequately injured he may knock you off the roof surrounded by his haste to escape. Good luck (my bird be a woodpecker)
