Looks like a to some extent high tech electronic, digital, switch. Likely for some sort of security lock.

The contacts are connect through the knob. I bet there is a chip inside the knob that the lock reads the code on it.

But I don't see that one.

It could even be a car push button as many different cars now own electronic keys.
Answers:    i have one exactly resembling that ! its used for those "industrial" brown paper towel dispensers - the manner in public bathrooms , school. i have those installed contained by my bathroom ( hubby a school janitor) and the switch fits into the top section which flops down so i can replace the aimless rolls with the investigational.
