I was snowblowing and I hit a rock, which stalled out the motor, when I fired it backbone up the internal auger started making a loud clunking noise. They both appear to turn, but I am not sure if something is bent or a position is out or what. How do I make this determination minus spending a ton of money to have a shop look at it?
Answers: Shut past its sell-by date the engine and rotate the second stage by hand. Listen for any grinding noise to locate the problem. The rock may have jammed against the side or even found its mode behind the second stage. Check shear pins and replace if needed.
These things are moderately simple and straightforward. Look at it, figure out how it works, and you'll hold an easy time beside troubleshooting and repair.
It may also be a good time to lubricate the side bearing and the center worm gear drive.
Make sure that the motor cannot start and the auger drive is disengaged. Try to rotate auger by hand. You will have a feeling any rough spots when you rotate it. I suspect if it is making a noise later something is bent or broken.
