Shower porthole caulking problem? I seem to be have a problem with the caulking splitting...
I seem to be have a problem with the caulking splitting around the skylight in my shower. The caulking is around the porthole above my shower, not around the tub itself. We have tried three times immediately and it has split every time. We hold removed the old caulking, cleaned it near alcohol, and let it sit for 48 hours and it have cracked every time. Some have suggested innards the tub with hose down. I'm not sure this would help because it is the porthole caulk this is cracking. Could it be moisture from the window? roast from the window? should i run a dehumidifier and block sunlight from the skylight while it dries? thanks within advance for the aid!
It sounds similar to you are using cheap caulk that isnt very flexible. If caulk isnt flexible, its subjected to cracking as it shrinks as it dries.
GE silicone II caulk is great because its extremely flexible and immensely water tight. I would use that.
I believe both of the above are on the right track. I only want to give: I don't personally approaching the appearance of the caulks that are white and have a shiny finish, so you may be capable of find them in color, or ones that provide a paintable surface.
Just remember the paint have to be flexible too.
If the caulked area have water sitting on it, it is best to transport your used towel and pat it dry after each shower. It is not right to allow it to soak under wet for extended periods of time.
Answers: may depend on what type of caulking you are using-- if it is a typical latex painters caulk, the constant wet and drying will cause it to split away from the window-- try GE silicone II or Phenoseal-- something like $ 4 - 5 dollars a tube at most Lowes or Depots-- the silicone base will maintain it flexible
