Several circuits in my house started tripping final month so I called a local reputable company. The electrician recommended replacing my elderly electric panel, something I knew have to be done.
He quoted $1700 which sounded great because a previous electrician said it would be about $3000.
He did the work and at the extremely end of the afternoon, he said: "The only article that concerns me is you're going to need a exotic line running from your electric panel to the basic breaker box outside."
He said my existing line is 150 amps, and the breaker box outside is 200 amps. He said because I hold added a lot of life-size appliances (two washers, two a/c's, fridges, etc.) in former times several years that the existing line could bring back overloaded and burn up or explode. (BTW I counted amps on new panel switches and it totals close to 500 amps!! )
He quoted $900 to run 25-foot line from the panel to breaker outside, doing this "on the side" and not through the company. Should I hire him or is this fishy?
Answers: Call the company support and talk it over next to them. No reputable electrician does side jobs bringing up the rear the companies back. Your living is the companies work, not his. He is being dishonest. Ask for another electrician from the company to come out and look. It sounds bogus to me. $900 is style to much anyway.
The adding up of the circuit breakers method nothing. None of them are running at full nouns and some are using none or very little. If here is a problem, the 200 amp main will trip. Is nearby also a main surrounded by the new panel? What size?
Email me if you entail more information about this. Don't lug electrical advise from the untrained, unqualified relations on yahoo. Read my profile to find out why.
The guy wants to craft some money. 25 ft. for $900 is a bit high. It would assist me give counsel if I knew what size flex is currently there. It is particularly possible that what you have is fair. What should also concern you is that if this is a reputable company, they would not have installed a topical box if the wiring did not draw together code for it to begin next to. If it were to confine fire, he has set himself up for leading liablity.
The $1700 also seems a touch high to me if adjectives he did was replace the breaker box.
