2-part question:
I only moved into a Condo (2br, 2ba, loft) with a 20+ year hoary heat pump system installed (original from when the condos be built). Should I have the system serviced or replaced? It can't hold on to up in this frigid weather and I want something more reorganized.
How much can I expect to pay for a unusual system installed (ultra-efficient model)?
Answers: I would recommend that first you have it serviced, and consent to me tell you what that technique.
Don't call some company within the phone book. Ask around first. Find a guy who owns and runs his own business.
Have them clean the condenser and the evaporator coils beside condenser cleaner, charge the unit near refridgerant if needed and change the filter.
That one done, if it works better consider replacing the unit back the summer or in the fall down. If not you might have to replace it sooner.
I would recommend replacing it beside a newer heat pump beside what ever efficiency you mull over is cost effective.
I'm not sure where on earth you live, but it could cost 10,000 to get a foreign heat pump. Then again it could cost purely half that. It adjectives really depends on what you get.
Here's the low down: GE make the Fan motors. (Multi Speed costs a whole lot more) Two Companies spawn the Compressors. (Some models will have two compressors=more $$$) Then near are the coils.
What you pay for is the NAME. There will be some flux in standard, but pretty much it's the same stuff no situation who you're getting it from. You are also paying for service and for the warranty.
When the Heat and Air guy buys the Unit, it likely doesn't enjoy the name on it even so, he has to put it on after he get it.
Carrier, Bryant, Payne...all like peas in a pod.
Goodman, Janitrol, the same...
The with the sole purpose one that is really different is the Puron by Carrier, it's proprietary.
probly cheaper to replace, but as for price ya get to shop around good luck
