My mower blows smoke out of the air filter. I figure it's a timing issue. How do I fix it myself? (I'm routinely inclined)
Sounds like ignition timing. Remove the cowling, and the flywheel nut. You will see the keyways contained by the flywheel and crankshaft. They must be aligned, if not remove the flywheel and replace the key. That is the singular thing that will effect the ignition timing. If the valve timing is stale it is because something broke. It can't change under conventional conditions unless it was put together wrong. does the exhaust still come out of the exhaust side or is it sucking air within that way?

Smoke is coming out of the atmosphere filter when the engine is running?!? There should be lots of BACKFIRING if the timing is that bad, and I seriously doubt that the engine could be running BACKWARDS as fireguy is indicating. If you're mechanically inclined, start next to pulling the spark plug and see what condition it is in. If the engine is 2-cycle that's one case and if it is 4-cycle, it's another to check on the timing.

I consider myself to be robotically inclined also, but I wouldn't tackle trying to dismantle even a mower engine to try to check for correct timing.
Answers:    The problem is either in the camshaft,or the exhaust tap. These two work together to open the valve,if the spigot doesn't open it will go stern out the intake, and up through the carb..good luck, sounds fatal to me.
