Concrete block basement walls hold mostly horizontal cracks, that spread as the wall bows in for section of the year,( trees were planted too close 60 yrs. ago). The wall contracts other parts of the year. No leak. Another interior wall shifts too, compensating for the exterior. On the main floor hairline cracks appear on walls and ceiling.

For the energy of the building, are we better off to address it or forget about it?
Address it!

There's always movement of sorts between summer and winter. Summer tighter...... Winter looser

Sounds similar to your house is extreme. However, with your situation it's probably the tree roots are push up against your house foundation which will stand for merely so much pressure and then God with the sole purpose knows what's subsequent.

It's too bad, but you're going to own to get rid of the trees, stumps and adjectives. People plant trees with know concept how large they'll grow.

Have a professional tree service come over and help yourself to the tree down, stump and all and ask almost the root system. If there are others planted to close to house, ask just about them too.

Make price checks and ask around so you don't get attain ripped. They'll haul for a levy or ask around if someone wants to buy the wood.

Good Luck

I would address it. If it's a foundation wall (and it sounds like it is) it's attitude the weight of your house.

If there's clay up against it, it'll expand & contract (I don't regard as that would happen beside roots). A french drain would fix it. There are companies that put drains along the interior base of the wall, and to be precise supposed to work well.

And, I'm sorry to speak, it will not be cheap.
Answers:    Address it, obviously.

Any prospect you can remove those trees and roots? If not, I would contact a contractor who specializes in foundation repair. They can probable figure out a passageway to stabilize the situation before it become a major problem.

I have this done on my own house, and it was newly a matter of reinforcing the crypt walls.
