My Whirlpool washer does everything but spin what is wrong?

Some of those Whirlpool washers have a weak lid switch. It won't spin unless it think the lid is closed. They could go past its sell-by date balance and break the switch.

They haven't have a belt or pulley on them for something like the finishing 15 years or more. They are now what they hail as "direct drive".
I am presuming this is a clothes washer not a dish washer.
Check the safety switch, it may hold broken off. It is located below the top, look on the door for the protruding trigger there will be a corresponding channel on the washer. Easy to fix, usually prying the top open and 2 screw. Also the drive belt or pulley may be broken. You will have to remove the front cover to check these.
These are you best starting points. Make sure that the contraption is unplugged before you work on it, work nontoxic.
I have see my fair share of washers (mom's & sister's )and own never had a motor burn out but here is a first time for everything.

Answers:    There are some good answers here. The lid switch is a safekeeping device for your protection. It the switch is faulty or not occupied, it won't let the current through to absorb the spin cycle. Before the lid safety switch, some family got their hand and/or arms severely damaged or amputated from reaching into the washer during a spin cycle. I once hear about a 6 yr older boy who lost his entire arm to the shoulder from doing that. Do not bypass this switch. It is a fairly simple replacement livelihood.
