We sanded past its sell-by date the lacquer from our oak floor and the smell remains. It is possible that cats initially urinated on the lacquer. this was the principle for us sanding. Is it possible that the urine penetrated through the lacquer? There are no stains on the imperfect floor and the lacquer was pretty gooey.
We are really dumbfounded by this as after sanding and cleaning the room the smell remains. What to do?

Answers: Depending on how much soaked surrounded by to the actual floor, you may be able to encapsulate the odor. Have you sand the entire floor, or just the nouns where the odor is? In any case, since you already sand part of the floor, you will inevitability to sand the rest. Then apply stain (if desires), and apply a coat of polyurethane. Coat the entire floor in one shot, as this will brand the finish monolithic. Scuff the surface lightly beside 000 steel wool, then vacuum the dust and apply another coat. Scuff again, after apply a third coat. This should trap the smells inside the floor and protect your floors for several more years. Good luck.
Cat urine probably soaked in to the wood and seep in to the crevaces. The lone way to fully emliminate that smell is to replace the wood where on earth it smells. You can try things like oder removers and enzymes but I don't suggest they will work. (They have never fully worked for me on cat urine. It is instrument too acidic.) Replace the smelly panel and you should be good.
