My Honeywell CT87N thermostat will with the sole purpose progress on when I set it 7 or 8 degree over the current temp? Is it supposed to work this way, or is near something wrong...

Answers: lately relevel the sub-base. When they are not exactly level they will not operate at the proper temp.
Sounds close to it may be going bad. Take the cover rotten and look at the mercury switch in side and see if its moving when you move the dial. Its average for it to not come on till you move it a few deg. This type of Thermostat is not that accurate. You can replace it for about $20. and here is only a few wires on th backbone. Takes about 5 min to replace.You can also upgrade to a digital beside a solid state switch this will be a lot more accurate. The one I own you can set the temp deviation as to when it will turn on. I have its set at similar to 1deg in the winter and 2-3 deg contained by the summer to prevent the air from short cycling.
