Mower problems? My mower was lighting my carb on fire, so I figure it...

My mower was lighting my carb on fire, so I figure it was the timing. I took off the engine and I fixed the timing. It be off by a bit. IT is still doing that. Do I need a spout job? What do I do?
Adjust the tappet clearances. 0.005 exhaust and 0.007 intake.

sounds close to it. either that or you might need alien heads all together. the tap seat might be worn and might not sit properly. Clean carb than lap the valve and clean combustion chamber and pistion head and cylinder organizer and your done! don't forget to check the flywheel key
Answers:    Wait a minute, you took the engine off and fixed the timing? How did you do that? If your discussion about ignition timing the only entity that effects that is the relationship between the flywheel and the crankshaft. If your talking tap timing you have to take the engine apart to alter it. Neither can be off by a bit. They are either right or wrong. Sounds to me resembling the intake valve is leaking. It is closing satisfactory to allow combustion but allowing part of it to get out of the cylinder.
