I just found this out. Not sure if it's true.

Our meter reader, for the hot house we're renting, has to come surrounded by and read it in the vault. I guess it's not outside.

Now, are they going to be coming in my house, surrounded by the basement, once a month?

If so, is nearby anyways around it?
Answers:    See if the utility company can install an external reader. You should get your manager (the property owner) involved before you request this. We have this done at our last house for the hose meter that was contained by the basement.

Stuff is varying all the time, we immediately have drive-by meters installed. The company drives by beside a radio transmitter and reads respectively meter at 35 mph. Not the best of times to consider meter reading as a career.
Yes, it can be true. I lived as a child contained by a house with the meter inside. If they do not procure access, they will estimate your bill and the estimates can be WAY off.

Technically, since you are renting, its not in truth "your" house. The landlord can waltz within there anytime they want to as very well.

Our current house has the meter within the yard where on earth we keep several substantial bouncy dogs. We had the meter replaced after escrow closed beside one that can be read remotely from the street. It is unlikely that you can get anything similar to that since you don't own the place, but you can ask the landlord in the order of getting it done.
