House is only 3 years ancient and this problem has simply started happening. I tried another outlet with the sole purpose a foot away and things seemed fine.for going on for five seconds. Then the pop and no lights again. Is this unpromising wiring or something else? Thanks!
You own a short in the circuit somewhere, it draws too much current and pops the breaker. Assuming your electric wiring is in conduit, I would suspect a desperate switch, but the wiring at the socket might be sloppy. If you are mortified poking at the wiring, or if you cannot find anything wrong, get hold of an electrician to do it. You don't want to take a kismet on burning your house down

You didn't say whether the storm lantern was complex wired into the wiring or whether it be a plug in storm lantern. If it is a plug in oil lamp, try another lamp surrounded by the outlet. See if it does the same item. It is either out of order wiring or possibly a short surrounded by the lamp. I own installed lamp lights which run up on each side of the mirror. They are wired into the electrical system. When I connected them, one of the wires came loose. Had to filch the lamp apart again and tighten the connections. NO situation what---you have a short! That is why they invented breakers!!

If what I am caring, make sure your insurance is remunerated up quickly, and wish advice from and electrician.
Answers:    Try another small appliance or hurricane lantern in one and the same outlets. Sounds like the light has a problem approaching a short circuit. If the next appliance works fine next the problem is your lamp. A three year ancient house should not have problems approaching this. Only other possibility is a loose wire on the side of the receptacle or on the breaker contained by the circuit breaker panel.
Good luck
