I hired a guy to build a slope for rain within the flower bed. He brought this red clay dirt (In PA). He said that was best and that it be good for plants? Never hear such a thing. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I NEED HIM TO REMOVE AND BRING REAL DIRT. THANKS
Answers: If I am reading this correctly, you are have this done to have the river run away from the house. If that is so, I would use the red clay also. It wont involve or allow water to run through it like dirt would. If it is appearance that bothers you, you can other layer some dirt on top. The clay underneath is what will stop marine from pooling at the house line. I hope this help you.
It sounds like you hired him to aid you get rid of excess hose down in the flower bed, and augment drainage around your home. Clay is certainly not the answer; it is great at holding marine. You need to enjoy the top 3-6" of clay removed, and replaced with topsoil. This should be next *thoroughly* mixed in near the next 6" of clay. You'll hold a nice bed to plant in, and still profess your slope for drainage/runoff.
