A friend is getting really dignified hydro bills...
Remove the filter and get a modern one if it is dirty. Turn the thermostat to off and the supporter switch to on. This will allow the coils to thaw. tolerate it go for a couple of hours. Turn the supporter back to auto and the other to cool and see how it is. If it works replace the filter and you are obedient to go. If not, the coils could be dirty or the system low on refrigerant.
