I live in an apartment building in NYC. There is no septic reservoir; we have sewers. Am I doing any damage to the pipes or sewer or anything?

Yes. There are many toxic chemicals contained by cigarette butts. These will eventually find their way to water ways. Arsenic is one of the chemicals commonly found surrounded by cigarette butts. The chemicals adversely affect wildlife dependent upon the waterways. I'm going to write to the major cigarette companies to develop a biodegradable cigarette butt. I believe near is the technology to do so rather easily and cost efficient. For now, I dispose my butts in regular trash. Better, even so maybe I should quit smoking. Yeah right. Hey it could happen. Have a nice time. it wont hurt a thing, unless you are the one worried about the chemicals surrounded by the butt that will harm the water system... by the mode it gets filtered. I wouldnt not taken my ashtray in there everytime it get full but no a butt here and there isnt going to hurt anything. Give those NYC Rats something to naw on. :)
Answers: No, you will not lay waste to the pipes. But, the butts can get stuck which will cause other stuff to receive stuck which will cause obstructions and slow down the flow, and perchance even eventually block the flow, then you will pay a plumber to snake out the flash. Also, the sewer treatment facilities are not set up to get rid of cigarette butts and other non-sewage items, and it costs the sewer authority profusely of money each year to get rid of that stuff, which is added to your sewer bills.
So, though you will not mess up the pipes, it is not a good thing to do, and the web result is a higher cost for sewer treatment.
