We just had our in-ground pool tiling re-done. We hold a cantilever (floating) pool deck meaning there is no coping around the pool boundary. The concrete deck overhangs the pool edge and would butt up against the tiling/grout.
The old tiling have some plastic strip between the tile and the pool deck. I imagine it was some type of expansion cohesive material which would allow the pool deck to rise and fall in need disturbing the tile or grout.
The contractor removed all this plastic stripping and relaid a row of tile with the grout right up against pool deck. Is this the proper application? When the winter comes and the ground freezes and pushes the pool deck incrementally, won't this grout go wrong and a crack will develop over time? Please reference something I can take rear legs to the contractor to explain/show the application was incorrect.
Answers: You are correct, it will crack and it wont take to long to do it.
You involve to install a backer rod in this united. A backer rod is a closed cell foam rope available at better tile stores. The backer rod is after caulked with a color to match your grout. To revise more about backer rods and expansion joint you might want to read this article.
